April 26, 2004 started out to be one of the most joyous days of our lives, but without warning became the most devastating. Our son Trey Arthur Green, was born at 7:13 AM. Almost immediately, we realized something was terribly wrong. Although he was a beautiful baby and appeared healthy on the outside, he simply could not take a full breath. One hour and three minutes later, he died.
Trey had been a textbook pregnancy and delivery, which left the doctors, as well as my husband and me, with many questions.
Within a short time after his death his lifeless little body was transported to Children's Hospital in Seattle, hopefully to find answers. The doctors and nurses at Children's made us feel from the beginning that our loss and need to know what happened was important to them. Within 24 hours we knew what caused ours son's death, a diaphragmatic hernia. This condition impeded his lung development.
We felt genuine care and concern from the staff at Children's Hospital, as well as our own doctors in Port Angeles. They have an incredible outreach for those who are grieving. Since we were a distance from Seattle, they made special efforts via phone and by offering local grief counseling options. They were excellent at staying in touch.
We have since been to Children's Hospital and visited the memorial to our son, Trey. What a contradiction of pain and comfort. Trey was important to them and we will forever feel a unique connection to Children's Hospital and their exceptional staff. This guild is a way to honor our son's memory while raising funds for children and families in need. We will forever miss Trey but doing this work may prevent others from having a loss like ours.
